What Will It Take to Defeat the War?

http://www.internationalist.org

On June 28-29, an “Open National Antiwar Conference” was held in Cleveland, called by a newly minted National Assembly to End the Iraq War and Occupation. Over objections from the conference organizers, centrally Socialist Action, the assembly voted to change the name to include reference to the war on Afghanistan, and to emphasize the connection with U.S. backing for the Zionist occupation of Palestine.

Anatomy of a Successful Antiwar Movement

http://boston.indymedia.org

This summer there will be a National Assembly to End the Iraq War and Occupation in Cleveland, Ohio (http://natassembly.org). One of the main goals of the assembly will be to lay the groundwork for mass action against the war. At first glance, 2008 seems like an unlikely year to jump start a sluggish antiwar movement. With the elections this fall, the political pressure to line up behind the Democratic Party’s slate of candidates is already peeling away our fair weather friends from those of us who are serious about building an independent antiwar movement.

Socialist Party VP nominee calls McCain "reckless" on Iran

http://vote-socialist.org

As the Iraq War runs its bloody course, Iran has become a central focus in the 2008 presidential campaign. While not satisfied with Barack Obama's conditional plan for a much delayed disengagement from Iraq; Socialist Party Vice Presidential nominee Stewart A. Alexander says that he and his Presidential running mate Brian Moore are "greatly concerned" that comments being made by Republican presidential contender John McCain, regarding Iran "are reckless and irresponsible and will further escalate tensions in the Middle East and the international community."

The Opportunist Left and the Port Strike Against the War

http://www.internationalist.org

On May 1, ports up and down the Pacific Coast were shut down by the ILWU to demand an end to “this bloody war and occupation for imperial domination.” The Spartacist League for many years called for workers strikes against the war. However, as part of its turn from Trotskyism to centrism, the SL abandoned this key position.

May Day Strike Against the War Shuts Down All U.S. West Coast Ports

http://www.internationalist.org

On May 1, every port on the West Coast of the United States was shut down to demand an end to the U.S. war and occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan. The historic May Day walkout by the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) is the first time ever that an American union has struck against a U.S. war. The union ranks defied the rulings of an arbitrator, who twice ordered them to go to work.

All Out on May Day!

http://www.internationalist.org

On May 1, all 29 ports on the U.S. West Coast are to be shut down by the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) in protest against the U.S. war on Afghanistan and Iraq. This is a historic event of international significance: labor action against imperialist war by a major American union. The strategically placed port workers in the ILWU can bring commerce with Asia to a grinding halt, and they’re about to demonstrate it. The maritime employers are already screaming, and you can bet it’s got the attention of the warmongers in Washington.

Venezuela and the Hackers’ Revolution

http://www.greens.org

The Third International Forum on Free Knowledge was recently held in Maracaibo, Venezuela, bringing together many people interested in the development of free software worldwide. One reason Venezuela chose to host this event is that, in January 2006, their new free software law came into effect, which mandates that all government agencies migrate to free software over a two-year period. I was invited to speak about the use of free software in telecommunications. Many of the events and presentations at the event were, much like mine, of a rather technical nature.
